The Things We Try

Posted at 05:47 PM on November 22, 2009

These days my health has taken a dive and updating the site is not an easy thing, though I find it helpful to get my thoughts and feelings down, the actual simple process of switching on a laptop and typing is very hard at the moment, not to mention my eyes. They have this constant flashy thing going on and I don’t know how to explain it properly so please bear with me as I give it a shot…. My eyes get tired a lot quicker these days, then they start having a disturbing and blinding flash of some sort. It keeps flashing almost like the way a camera does when you’re taking a picture, except it’s in the eyes and making my vision blurred. Fortunately it comes and goes, I have an appointment with the eye dude this Friday.

Alright I got help writing this post, I wanted write down all the tests I’ve had and the doctors I’ve seen and am seeing. I got the info from my records and also from the doctors I’ve been seeing since I got the amnesia. This is the info that was right here in my boudoir, the other records are at the doctors.

I’ve had the following:

  • Gastroscopy - because when I first got sick my stomach was the most problematic along with my head, they still are. It was done by a doctor at a private hospital call La Verna in Ladysmith, South Africa. The results came back only showing hunger but nothing out of the ordinary. * Flexible Sigmoidoscopy - it was also done to find out why my abdomen was so painful and I was forever constipated.
  • Lumber Punch - it was done because one General Practitioner suspected meningitis and transferred me to another private hospital in Pietermaritzburg. From what I heard my biggest complaint was how painful the thing is and I hated it… Results again came back clean and eventually they sent me home.
  • CAT Scan - a search for tumors and what not, another failure.
  • MRI Scan - It was done very late because we thought a cat scan was enough but turns out it’s not… It is expensive and the family was already broke because of a lot of my costs but they put money together and I got the test. It was done at St. Annes, a very good private hospital and again the results came back squeaky clean.
  • HIV Test - I’ve had this test a number of times because each doctor wants to see for himself/herself before treating me…. Results always come back negative.

Alright, I should mention that I reached a point where I was tired of tests and needles and scans and drips, I wanted non anymore and for a long time I stayed at home and only went to a GP when I really needed to. But a lot of factors, family, will to live, seeing I was still alive, desire to watch my nephew grow up, and my beautiful stranger came into my life and I realized hey I wanna beat this thing, I wasn't done living yet.

I started going to specialists again and my first one was:

  • Neurologist - well we first made a mistake and went to a neurosurgeon, he couldn’t help us so we booked an appointment and went to a neurologist. They thought I had some form of nervous system disorder. My seizures were the biggest problem, also the dizziness, vomiting, the eating problem, the involuntary jerking of my body especially my leg and just about everything........................................ The neurologist did a complete neurological evaluation and follow up, after all the testing the doctor said he couldn’t put me on any medication because the tests revealed nothing. So we hightailed our behinds out of there.

Then I developed heart pains and a few months ago I went to see a

  • Cardiologist in St. Annes, I remember this visit because it happened in June. We got there and did all the necessary tests, he asked had I been seen by a neurologist because all my symptoms tell me that’ who I need to see and we said yes. But you know me and curiosity, I wanted to see the dude again to satisfy that “What If” at the back of my mind. The cardiologist finished his exam and immediately called the neurologist, within 30 minutes I had these sticky things all over my body and the nurse was shocking me and that part of my body would move, it was uncomfortable but also great fun, hahaha, ...........Seriously, as soon as I got used to it I started liking that tingle. Alright I know I’m a weirdo……………………. !!!

When everything was done and we finally got the results, I really believed he was gonna say well Silindile, you has such and such in your body but again he couldn't find the cause of all my problems.

To manage my day-to-day life I go to a General Practitioner when my pains get too much or when I develop feet sores of I have flu or my arm starts doing what it does best. I have a specific GP in every place I live in, II have one I see when with my grandma, another when I'm at my parent's house and another when I'm at Mom Ndu's place.

From the records I saw that I have been tested for poisoning, I tested for lead poisoning but I'm trying to get another test just to see for myself... Another test I'd like to repeat is the MRI but at the moment we can't afford it... The last one is the gastric one because my stomach is really behaving badly, the swelling and deflating, the one day up the next day down and painless is worrying me.

For now I have to switch off the computer and get some rest, I can barely see what I'm writing and I'm really sorry if what I've written makes no sense and is riddled with spelling mistakes.

My prayer these days "Lord please, let the doctors find something wrong with me, it doesn't matter what it is, how small or how big, reveal it because then I can get a chance to be cured"

Golly Moses Woman! I had a friend quite a while ago who was not quite in Your shoes but her stories of being tested and tested and tested and tested some more were the same as Yours. It amazes me in this day and age how odd the whole process can be. You must be frustrated. And Yet You still spread sunshine. wow. Just wishing You an ANSWER and a quality of ease to all of this. Much Love!!!!

It's very odd and invasive, kinda makes me feel like one of the monkeys in a lab being used as a test subject.. Some tests are ticklish though, ha ha ha.
I'm putting on my best dress and Sunday shoes for my trip to BlissBait's house, see you when I get there honey!

Reading what you have written here, I have to wonder about the possibilities of allergies and/or poisoning as well....
A bee sting to me is a bee sting, but to my sister it can be a matter of life and death.
Food allergies are the most common...perhaps you can see an allergist?
We can develop allergies at any time in our lives, so it may be something which is and always has been common in your diet or surroundings.
In the meantime, I cannot help but wonder if something like acupuncture or even acupressure would help with some of your painful symptoms...your arm, headaches and possibly even the seizures.
Finding out the root problem is the problem here...we gotta figure out what has happened to you baby girl.
Not only will I pray, but I will call out to the universe...the stars, the sun, the moon, the sky, the sea, the fish, the dirt, the trees, the ladybugs & dragonflies, the children and the turtles, the cats, dogs and seniors to all will a bright healing light of knowledge and perseverance your way.

My allergy curiosity has been raised and I'm definitely gonna test for as many as an allergist will suggest... The dirt? Ha ha ha you're funny but I love it, ha ha ha... Thank you for such a beautiful message, thank you so much.

simple blood test for the Celiac disease--I had the test and life is 'different' on the gluten free diet...not fun, but doable. Much more doable than the symptoms which were not diagnosed for over a year.

I feel for you.....badly... Not having answers, something to name it--is a scary, angering place to be.

You've been through so much and you're still standing and funny and witty, you're an inspiration... Not knowing is a bad place to be in and at this point I'm learning to live with it and be happy because the anger will eat me alive.

Feel better, sweet seraph. The new look on your blog is just beautiful. The script separating sections on the right reminds me of the elven script in J. R. R. Tolkien's books.

Oh thank you, I was playing around with different templates and ended here.. Thank you for the well wishes.

i'll stay tuned to see how things go for you- wishing you all the best and that something will show up on one of your tests. wish i could help but it seems you are having a battery of tests and unfortunatley no diagnosis yet.

I'll let you know how it goes, I still believe the answer is out there somewhere and I'll keep knocking on doors till one opens and gives me the answer. Nothing is more powerful than faith.

Believe me this is very helpful, saying hi feel better makes me feel better... I'm trying the 'caring for a pet might be helpful' approach, maybe they'll bite.
Always a pleasure visiting your blog

Thanks Sil for that info, Im sure there are lots of us here who want to help. My initial thought was that a neurologist would be the way to go. An EEG measures the firing of neurons in the brain. It's good for diagnosing the cause of seizures and other abnormal brain activity. I think it could be very usefull to you - you can find some info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EEG#Clinical_use
(I should point out im not a doctor, i just have a major in psychology and an interest in neuroscience).
Now for my other suggestion, and this one is a long shot..... Have you ever head of Celiac Disease? I agree with Luisa, that some of your symptoms seems to indicate an allergic reaction. If our is allergic to something, its toxic to us. Some allergys come on quickly and are harmless (like hay fever) but others we dont notice, until that toxicity builds up more and more, and the damage becomes more and more. Celiac Disease is an allergy to Gluten. A friend of mine was diagnosed in highschool with both epilepsy and a possible brain tumor, until someone finally had the sense to test her for allergys are they realised that she was just a Celiac. The symptoms you have told us about seem a lot worse than any case ive ever heard of, but here are a list of symptoms:
- Diarrhea
- Constipation
- Seizures
- Excessive gas
- Abdominal pain with stomach bloating
- Chronic fatigue
- Weakness
- Weight loss
- Bone and joint pain
- Easily fractured bones
- Muscle cramps
- Including burning, prickling, itching or tingling
- Edema (swelling due to fluid under the skin)
- Headaches
- Peripheral Neuropathy (unusual sensations such as tingling or burner, usually in legs and feet or arms and hands)
- Irritability and depression.
- Mouth sores
- Menstrual irregularities
- Skin rash
- Tooth discolouration
- White flecks on the fingernails
- Fuzzy-mindedness after gluten ingestion
- Burning sensations in the throat
and can lead to
Osteoporosis, tooth enamel defects, central and peripheral nervous system disease, pancreatic disease, internal hemorrhaging and other disorders.

Sorry about the long long post. Hope this info might be useful. Good luck Sil,
x

The long post is more than welcome, I appreciate any help and info I can get, any suggestion is highly appreciated and I'm bowing in thanks.
The EEG I'm definitely gonna have, I've already spoken to my mother about it and we'll see what we can do as soon as possible.................. As for the allergies well thing is because of this illness I've developed a lot of allergies that also can't be explained, for example I can't be anywhere near any kind of smell. If I smell something even as simple as scented vaseline or perfume of even food while it's being cooked I start vomiting and vomiting till I pass out of blood starts coming out of my mouth.. Another reason why hospitals don't keep me for too long. They give me the mask for my stay but after testing me they send me home just to give me a break.

I don't think anyone ever tested this Celiac Disease, thank you very much for a heads up I'll talk to my doctor about it, who happens to be a very very veerrrry hot doctor.
